Madrid’s Plaza Mayor to get new lease of life
Madrid’s most famous square, the Plaza Mayor, is to get a cultural makeover following a renovation costing €3.3 million. At present the plaza, which dates to the 18th century in its current form, is having its facades spruced up and repairs done to the historic buildings that flank the vast public space.
Now the new left-wing council ruling Madrid wants to create a cultural agenda of concerts, exhibitions and theatre performances in an effort to make better use of the space in what is one of the city’s most important tourist hotspots.
