Lost whale returned to sea in Buenos Aires

A young whale, believed to be a humpback, that found itself lost amongst the luxury yachts of Puerto Madero marina in Buenos Aires has successfully been returned to the Atlantic Ocean.

A team of boats led the whale up the Rio Plata River back to the open ocean supported by the Environment secretary, the Coast Guard, marine biologists and local NGO’s. There were concerns over the whale’s health and safety as the freshwater environment can be quite damaging to the mammal’s skin and offers no source of food. Mariano Sironi, scientific direct of the Whale Conservation Institute in Argentina, said that it isn’t uncommon for whales to ‘get disoriented and swim upstream in rivers.’ Read more: mercopress.com
