London tornado was like a scene from Wizard of Oz
The homeowner whose garage was destroyed yesterday in tornado weather conditions today claimed the incident provided her with a “good excuse for a clear-out.” Residents saw the sky go black followed by a 10-minute downpour of rain and hailstones in what the Met Office today said were the “perfect conditions for a tornado.”
London Fire Brigade disclosed that a garage collapsed and roof tiles were blown off some properties following severe weather in Harrow in north-west London. No one was hurt.Fire crews were called to Grafton Road shortly before 1.15 pm after the garage, which was attached to a house, collapsed. Cars in nearby roads suffered minor damage. Tiles were stripped from roofs and cars in a nearby road were damaged by falling debris and flying wheelie bins, witnesses said.
The Evening Standard reports that a tree had been pulled out of the ground and landed in a nearby hedge at the end of the street. Firefighters said it was like “a scene from the Wizard of Oz” when they raced to the road at 1.15pm.
Carol Grant, a retired lecturer at Harrow College, and her husband Gordon, were inside their £430,000 semi-detached home, when she looked out of the window and saw her garage roof “bending” in the wind.
