Locals protest over Spanish tournament in Roman theatre

Community groups in Spain are up in arms over plans to hold an event for the World Padel Tour in a Unesco World Heritage Roman amphitheatre dating back to the first century BC. Padel is a racquet sport popular in Spain and Latin America, but little known elsewhere. The theatre is located in Mérida and locals have complained that hosting the tournament at the historic site would be an ‘affront to history’. If the event goes ahead, it will be held between 4 May and 10 May. Read more: thelocal.es
