Learn the secrets of the man who visited every country in the world on a budget
This year, Henrik Jeppesen completed a trip that saw him visiting every country in the world on a budget. His adventure included travelling to 193 countries, flying 850 times with more than 200 different airlines, staying in more than 1000 hotels before finally finishing in the last country of Eritrea at the age of 27 and on his tenth passport.
The Danish man started the great adventure at the age of 17, visiting Egypt and South East Asia. “Since then, travel has been my number one priority in life,” he told Lonely Planet News. From there, Henrik began travelling to as many countries as he could for as cheaply as possible, documenting the journey on his blog while taking a picture in each place he visited. He began to travel full time in 2010.
When it comes to seeing the world, he thinks that it’s possible for any savvy would be traveller to hit the road on a budget. “Anyone can do what I did. Stay with local people and book lots of low-cost flights and bus tickets when there are promotions running. Sign up for low-cost newsletters and follow airlines on Twitter,” he said. After he hit 100 countries, companies began to sponsor Henrik to travel in exchange for promotion in front of his every growing number of followers.
Some of Henrik’s favourite countries that he visited include Italy, South Africa, New Zealand, Seychelles and France. Because of the wide range of cultures that he experienced, he finds it difficult to pick a favourite to top the list. “I can’t pick a number one. It would not be fair to say one country is better than another one! I like places for different reasons. I loved Italy for the food, people and stunning countryside for example,” said Henrik.
It wasn’t all good times for Henrik however, who got food poisoning four times and was robbed four times also. “My family is very happy that they don’t have to worry about me travelling in more dangerous places for the moment!” Henrik said.
His family may not be happy for long however, as Henrik is already planning to hit the road again. “My next adventures include an attempt to visit every territory in the world, every American state and focus more on countryside travel than cities”. So far, he has visited 96 out of the 132 recognised territories in the world.
