Netflix's popular new series faithfully dramatizes the rise and demise of the notorious drug lord, 'El Patron', who exported 80% of the United States' smuggled cocaine during the 80s, and whose net worth at the height of his powers was deemed to be close to $30 billion. To this day he is considered one of the most powerful and wealthiest drug lords to have ever existed.

'Narcos' traces Escobar's run in with the authorities and various governments, as well as delighting viewers with the more legendary over-the-top escapades and unbelievable stories. What it also does is feature El Patron's close relationship with the inhabitants of the town in which he based his operations, Medellin.

Throughout his career Escobar was careful to build a strong relationship with the poor people of Colombia, donating money, setting up schools, and building housing projects and sports centres in his neighbourhood, presenting himself as Robin Hood-like persona to the people of Medellin in exchange for loyalty and tip offs. The locals obliged, making Medellin a town that was historically associated with having pro-Escobar sympathies.

Now, a Pablo Escobar tour set up in Medellin entitled 'Pablo Escobar Is History' seeks to allow visitors a  tour of the Escobar attractions, which are growing in popularity thanks to 'Narcos', while trying to maintain its distance and from the drug-lord. It brings tourists along for a visit to his famous home prison El Catedral, and to his grave, keeping the motto "Medellin’s story is one of triumph over adversity."
