Lake Mead trails closed to hikers as mercury rises

Record temperatures have forced park officials to close hiking trails in the Lake Mead Recreation Area.

On Tuesday the National Weather Service announced highs of 103 deg F, with a low of only 81 degrees, nearing the area’s record warm-minimum temperature. Wednesday’s high is forecasted to be 104, and temperatures are expected to remain around 100 for the week. Arizona Hot Spring and Goldstrike Canyon trails will remain closed until further notice. The superintendent for the area said hikers can miscalculate their ability to hike the desert trails in the summer, putting themselves and rescuers in danger of heat-related injury. Read more:
