Kyoto issues toilet rules for foreign tourists

In a bid to prevent misunderstandings among foreign visitors using toilets in Japan, Kyoto has put in place signs that indicate rules of usage, with explanations in English, Korean and Chinese.

Among the advice given by the signs are instructions on how to use flush sensors and whether the toilet requires the user to sit or squat. According to one Kyoto official, differing ‘cultural norms’ have led to some visitors misusing toilets, but ‘unpleasant incidents’ have decreased since the signs were put in place.
