Kerala offers free biryani to clean up environment
Local government officials in the Indian state of Kerala have come up with a novel way to encourage people to protect the environment: a free biryani.
Dozens of people turned up to help clean up polluted Pisharikavu Lake near Kozhikode on Tuesday after a Facebook appeal by district officer N Prasanth, who promised a free biryani to every volunteer. Money for the fried rice feast was taken from the state drought fund, as part of a push to address environmental issues proactively rather than reactively. Prasanth has earned a widespread following in Kerala for his humourous public announcements and enthusiastic use of social media, earning him the nickname ‘rockstar’ on many social channels.
