A town in southern Japan has been put on high alert for the possible eruption of a nearby volcano.
The highly-active Sakurajima volcano sits on an inhabited islands close to the city of Kagoshima. Residents were put on high alert and evacuated on Saturday after scientists recorded numerous volcanic earthquakes and a rise in magma levels. Sakurajima’s last major eruption happened in 2013, when it produced a 5000-metre-high ash plume that covered Kagoshima in a dark ash cloud for several days. Read more: mainichi.jp
