A young Italian couple have been arrested and fined €2329 after they tried to flag down a Ryanair plane on the runway at Malta International Airport. The couple, Matteo Clementi, 26, and Enrica Apollonio, 23, were running late for their flight due to heavy traffic on the way to the airport.

They checked in, but were unable to board the plane because the gate had closed. Desperate to board the flight, they ran to the next gate, forced open an emergency exit, ran out onto the runway and started signalling to the pilot to let them onto the plane. However, the plane’s engines had already been started and the stairs removed, and the couple were swiftly arrested by security services. Read more: telegraph.co.uk
