Sun salutation – the world marks International Yoga Day on the solstice
Around the world, people are taking part in celebrations for the International Day of Yoga. The United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the official International Day of Yoga back in 2014 to help raise awareness of the many benefits of practicing yoga. The day also happens to mark the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere and the winter solstice in the south.
The UN notes that “yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice” that originated in India, but has grown in popularity around the world. This year’s theme for the day is “Yoga for Health”, which aims to highlight the practice and its impact on holistic health of body and mind.
