Ice from plane toilet strikes woman in Bhopal

A woman from a village close to Bhopal has become the first person in India to be hit by so-called ‘blue ice’ - the aviation industry term for frozen human waste leaking from the toilet of an airliner.

The 60-year-old was walking down the road when the football-sized ball of ice crashed through the terrace of a house and hit her in the shoulder. Airlines are banned from purging their waste tanks in flight but leaks sometimes occur. If the incident is confirmed as a Blue Ice strike, the woman will be entitled to compensation from the airline, assuming the flight can be identified from flight records.
