Hurricane Fred pounds Cape Verde islands

Hurricane Fred hit the Cape Verde islands early Tuesday, making it the farthest east such a storm has ever been recorded in the tropical Atlantic.

Flights to the island nation, which lies off the west coast of Africa, have been suspended and flooding, heavy rain, mudslides and strong winds (up to 85 mph) have been predicted. The US-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) says the destructive weather pattern should subside by Wednesday. Read more:
