Hundreds of villas close to Sicily’s Valley of the Temples to be demolished

Prosecutors have issued an order to the town council of the Sicilian town of Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples park authority to begin bulldozing almost 200 houses and villas that have been built without planning permission too close to the Unesco World Heritage Site. The action to protect one of Italy’s most precious ancient sites, which consists of several 2500-year-old ancient Greek temples in a picturesque valley, comes after years of delays, including one block instigated by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
