Great white shark scare closes Newcastle beaches

Beaches around the Australian city of Newcastle have been closed after an estimated 1700kg, five metre-long great white shark was seen cruising along the coast this week. The local council says it is the biggest shark they’ve been seen: “Sightings have been across all beaches, from Stockton to Merewether. It is not safe for board riders to be out in the water, even close to shore, as sharks are known to move into the surf zone, hunting prey between where the surf breaks and the shoreline." Council lifeguards will be working extended hours to warn people coming to the beach after work as they may not be aware of the danger. Read more:
