Homeless give city tours a new angle in Vienna
New tours have been launched in Vienna to show the city from the perspective of homeless people. Shades Tours Vienna run two-and-a-half hour tours, led by a homeless person, which take visitors to an emergency night shelter, a soup kitchen, and a training or social worker session.
The purpose of the tours is to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of homelessness, with a hope that tour guides will find the experience makes it easier to re-enter the job market. Tours will all take place outside of normal shelter opening times, and guides will not be expected to talk about their personal stories in order to protect their privacy.
