Holidaying couple shocked by €221 fish dinner in Spain

Highlighting the perils of ordering before asking the price, a couple on holiday on the Balearic island of Formentera were dismayed when they received their bill for a fish dish that cost them €221.85.

The John Dory dinner was part of a typical fresh fish display and charged by the weight per kilo - though the price was not displayed. After a social media backlash against ‘rip-off restaurants’, consumer associations have warned that restaurants are well within their rights to charge whatever they like, as long as the price is available to diners.
