Thirty-five years ago one of the most violent prison riots in history took place at the New Mexico State Penitentiary.
Thirty-three inmates were killed and another 200 were treated for injuries. There were also reports of torture and mutilation. A haunted house attraction in Albuquerque is using a similar theme – inmates that have overrun their prison guards – to scare New Mexicans. Although the proceeds are being donated to United Way and organizers say the event is in good fun, some argue that the haunted house is in bad taste. The haunted house has been criticised for trivializing the 1980 riot in Santa Fe. This is the third year for the haunted house. Read more: abqjournal.com
