Delicious food, a comfy bed and culture: the most popular ingredients for a happy holiday
Research has found that enjoying local food and having somewhere comfortable to lay their heads at night ranked highest, respectively, in a survey of travellers' top ten ingredients for a happy holiday, and their top ten accommodation requirements.
The survey was conducted on 17,000 people from 17 countries worldwide by Booking.com, a world leader in booking hotel and other accommodations online.
It found that 48% of people ranked both delicious local food and perfect weather as their joint top happy holiday ingredients. These were followed by breathtaking scenery (45%), amazing accommodation (38%), smooth travel (37%), travelling with a partner (36%), travelling with family (34%), ticking off a new country (26%) and immersion in the culture (25%).
When it came to the top ten accommodation requirements for a happy holiday, a whopping 80% of travellers ranked a comfortable bed as their top priority. This was followed by a picturesque view (60%), free Wi-Fi (52%), nice toiletries (39%), soft pillows (35%), great room service menu (28%), a waterfall shower (25%), a complimentary bottle of wine on arrival (21%), coat hangers and wardrobe space (17%) and mood lighting (13%).
Other results from the happy holiday ingredients' survey include that 77% of people will book a holiday to cheer themselves up when they’re feeling a bit down. Researching where to go gave 72% a jolt of excitement.
