Hamlet’s Kronborg Castle in Denmark is on Airbnb for one night only to mark Shakespeare anniversary
Something very unique is happening in the state of Denmark – Kronborg Castle has been listed on Airbnb for one night only to mark 400 years since the death of Shakespeare.
The once-in-a-lifetime stay will bring a visitor and their guest to the Unesco World Heritage Site, which Shakespeare’s tragic character, Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, called home. The guests will get to spend 23 April – the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death – at the castle, and sleep where no one has slept for more than 100 years. The travellers will stay in the castle’s King’s Tower, which will be decorated “in Hamlet’s spirit with a canopy bed and queen’s antique portable toilet”.
As only two people can stay, anyone interested can write in expressing their interest on Airbnb for a chance to win the stay. The post, which is written by the character himself, tells prospective guests that they will get to sleep in a castle with views of a moat and the Swedish coast, but warns that “the ghost of my father may or may not walk the ramparts at night. It is advisable to sleep with one eye open”.
Anyone interested is asked to write in by 13 April and explain why they’d like to spend the night, with “extra points for submissions written in iambic pentameter”. Don’t worry if you’re not in Denmark; winners will be flown in from anywhere. But the winners will get more than just a night in a castle – they will also attend a special renaissance banquet held in the famous ballroom of Kronborg, hosted by Hamlet.
The winner, along with 300 other guests to the event, “will feast on asparagus with oyster emulsion, boneless quail, shoulder well with figs and apricots, lemon soufflé with candied peel and many other renaissance dishes”. There will also be performances by famous Danish actors, writers and singers during the dinner and dancers from the The Royal Danish Ballet.
If that doesn’t sound amazing enough, the winners will be served breakfast in bed by Hamlet’s friend Horatio.
