A Greek resort has unveiled a magical James Turrell light installation
Fans of renowned American artist James Turrell will be delighted to hear that Amanzoe, an idyllic Greek resort, is now home to one of his iconic light installations. ‘Sky Plain’ takes the form of a 6x6m cubic building with a large ceiling aperture, that’s installed in Villa 31. According to Amanzoe, this immersive installation “allows guests to experience a uniquely intimate relationship with the light of the sky.”
Villa 31 is located on the western ridge of the resort, offering unobstructed views over the surrounding landscape. “Perched on a hilltop with sweeping panoramas of the Peloponnese countryside, silvery olive groves and the glittering Aegean Sea, the resort is the perfect setting for this unique installation.”
Turrell is certainly an esteemed and respected artist. For over half a century, his body of work has drawn inspiration from nature, astronomy, architecture, physics and theology. Using light, he works on and affects the medium of perception. Widely known for his work, Roden Crater, a monumental-scale artwork created within a volcano in Northern Arizona, Turrell was recognised with concurrent solo exhibitions in the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
Talking about this project, Turrell commented, “without light, there is no life. Amanzoe means ‘peaceful life’, and I hope those who experience this work will feel a peaceful sense of the power of the light. We are creatures of the light, especially sunlight. I use light to explore perception but I did not create the light. This work is about sharing the light.”
Though Sky Plain (the only permanent Turrell installation in the Mediterranean) resides in Villa 31, you don’t have to be staying there to experience it. Subject to availability, guests of Amanzoe will also be able to enjoy the installation as part of a unique dining experience. After enjoying a delicious dinner, they’ll be invited to experience a private immersion in this unique and unusual work of art.
