Greek museums to close on weekends as guards stop work

The Panhellenic Union of Employees for the Guarding of Antiquities in Greece has announced that from 19 December the guards would no longer work on weekends, because the new state payroll for civil servants is reducing the weekend overtime compensation by 35%.

The decision, which means that Greek museums and archaeological sites would not be open to the public on weekends, has already received strong criticism from the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Tourist & Travel Agencies, who are working to make Greece a year-round destination. Read more:
