Looking for a gourmet Rocky Mountain high? Attend a 4-course pot-pairing dinner in Colorado
Attempting to shed the image that weed only incites junk food frenzies, one company in Colorado (which legalised marijuana use in 2012) is inviting gastronomes to put aside their preconceptions and dig into a deluxe dinner where each course comes with cannabis.
Anyone with cannabis curiosity can sign up for one of the $200 per plate pot-pairing seasonal dinners. Kendal Norrris is the founder of Mason Jar Event Group, the company that organises the dinners. “Growing up in the south, I was raised in a home where we had lots of elaborate parties and family gatherings,” recalled Norris.
About a year ago, Norris literally had a dream about cannabis dinners. “I have a passion for food, cannabis and bringing people together so when Mason Jar came to me in a dream, it seemed so natural. I can actually say Mason Jar is a dream come true.”
The recent four-course fall dinner included delectable dishes like slow-cooked pork shoulder with mole rojo, charred root veggies, green rice and escabeche paired with Headquarters Cannabis Company's Black Cherry Soda heritage strain, followed by smoked chocolate brownie cake garnished with mint ice cream and pine nut brittle matched with grated flakes of BlueKudu’s Alpine Glacier—cannabis-containing premium dark chocolate imbued with mint—and locally roasted CBD-infused Steepfuze Coffee.
“Our cannabis partners act as sommeliers throughout the dinner, describing the flavour profile of the marijuana served with each course and how it pairs well with the food,” explained Norris. The Black Cherry Soda pot served with the mole pork, as an example, could be described as smelling of dark and tart cherries with a sweet, black liquorice mouthfeel and a smooth, creamy finish. This is ganja for gourmands.
The next pot (not to be confused with pot-luck) dinner will take place on 26 January 2017 in Boulder. The chef has not yet been confirmed, but trust that it will be a goodie: to date, all of the dinners have been catered by Chef Hosea Rosenberg, the season five winner of Top Chef, and his well-known farm-to-table Boulder-based restaurant, Blackbelly Market. Marijuana-matching will be provided by boutique pot producer, The Clinic.
