Colorado Rockies is set to host the GoPro Mountain games, combining adventure sports, yoga and dog competitions
The GoPro Mountain Games, America’s largest adventure sports event will be returning to the small town of Vail in the High Rockies from 7-10 June.
The event brings together professional and amateur outdoor adventure athletes from around the world to compete in nine sports and 25 disciplines including cross country, a 10k run, freestyle, road cycling, extreme kayaking, and stand-up paddle sprint. Set at the base of Vail Mountain, the town of Vail is a popular destination for winter skiers and snowboarders - but the GoPro Mountain Games transforms the area into a haven for some 70,000 nature enthusiasts no matter what their athletic prowess is.
If you’re more of a spectator - the event will also host a mountain photography competition, adventure film school, film festival, and parties that celebrate everything the mountain lifestyle embodies. With a new venue layout, live music concerts are also set to be a major part of the weekend’s offerings. Over the three nights, free concerts will take place at the famed Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. On the bill are bands such as Chris Robinson Brotherhood and Bonfire Dub.
As always, crowd-pleasing dog competitions are back on the bill too. Think the “Speed Retrieve” swimming canine contest and “Extreme Vertical” i.e. long jump for pups and you’ve got the right idea. If you like your workout closer to a mat than a mountain peak, a whole range of yoga-themed meetups will be hosted over the weekend. Outdoor sessions such as Yoga Beats with live music, radiant flow, and integrated Vinyasa are not to be missed.
If all the activity has you ravenous, you can head to the Pacifico Food & Beer Garden where vendors will be serving everything from tacos and pizza to food indigenous to the area. For advocates of the world-renowned Whole30 program, the chance to dine with the movement’s co-founder Melissa Hartwig is an opportunity to be savored.
