Gambia declared an Islamic state by president

Gambia’s president Yahya Jammeh has declared that his country is now “an Islamic state”. The announcement was made as he addressed supporters over the weekend in the coastal town of Brufut.

He stressed that the rights of the small Christian minority would be respected and that women wouldn’t be held to a dress code. The president didn’t go into more detail about what the change would mean for Gambia. The country has a population of nearly two million, 90% of whom are Muslim.
