Former Beatles ashram in Rishikesh reopens to public
The former ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, spiritual guru to the Beatles during the Sergeant Pepper years, has been reopened to the public after being abandoned for nearly 20 years.
The guru and his followers left the ashram, in Rishikesh in northern India, following a tax dispute with the Indian government, and the compound was fenced off in 1997 and left to crumble into ruin. Tourists can now wander along nature trails through the stabilised ruins and explore the graffiti-covered meeting halls and the beehive-like meditation caves where the Fab Four sought inspiration for the songs that later appeared on the White Album.
