Forbidden City vexed by lovebirds’ vandalism

A 300-year-old bronze water vessel has made waves on the Chinese internet after it was vandalised by lovebirds.

A photo of the vat, which stands inside the Forbidden City in Beijing, was posted on a microblogging website after graffiti appeared on it in the form of a heart encircled by two names. The incident highlights a longstanding problem that the palace has had with graffiti. Museum staff say that the incidents happen every year because penalties for vandalism are not strong enough, though arrests have been made for similar offences in the past.
