Florence launches graffiti app for Campanile to crack down on vandalism
Restoration experts at Florence’s Campanile bell tower have come up with a novel way to keep the monument’s walls free from graffiti.
After cleaning centuries of dirt and graffiti from the walls of the 14th-century tower, restorers installed three digital tablets in the tower loaded with a special app that allows visitors to use digital pens, brushes and aerosols to make their mark without physically damaging the tower’s walls. Over 700 digital scrawls have been left in the first week alone, and the plan is to print them out each year and file them in the cathedral’s archives.
