Flash flooding in Utah kills eight, several missing

A strong thunderstorm caused flash flooding in Hildale, Utah, killing at least eight people. Emergency responders were still looking for five other missing people Tuesday morning.

The assistant fire chief of the town said that large passenger vehicles were swept away by the flooding. Residents say hundreds of people are sorting through the debris left behind by the waves of floodwater that came crashing through the streets. As a precaution, the National Park Service closed all slot canyons due to the flash flood warning.

The small town of Hildale sits near the border with Arizona, and has previously been known as the home base of a polygamous sect of Mormon fundamentalists, led by convicted felon Warren Jeffs. Read more: nbcnews.com
