Festival meat-ban ruffles feathers in Mumbai

A ban on the sale of meat during the Jain Paryushan festival is causing consternation in Mumbai where a row has broken out between the city council and state government over how many days the prohibition should last.

The ban, which affects all slaughterhouses and butchers in the city, was initially imposed for four days, but the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has threatened to extend the ban to eight days, the full duration of the festival. This has faced fierce opposition from Hindu, Muslim and other religious groups, who insist that they should not be bound by rules pertaining to the Jain religion.
