Fears grow over Grand Canyon development projects

Two construction projects in the Grand Canyon are the subject of criticism from groups who say they will bring unwanted development to the natural space. The proposed projects, a retail and residential development and a gondola that will take visitors to the canyon floor, are expected to add 2200 homes to a tiny village nearby and shuttle 10,000 visitors to the Grand Canyon per day. In addition to these developments, a portion of the north side of the canyon is being explored for uranium, and in 2012 the FAA relaxed flight regulations into the canyon, allowing helicopter tours fly as low as 1000ft off the ground.
