Family travel snap: brotherly bonding in South Africa
What’s the story behind this photo?
We had been out all day and all we wanted was to cool down in the sea. We were lucky enough to be staying right on Wilderness Beach which is situated on the Garden Route. It's a huge sandy expanse which is unspoilt and relatively uncrowded. As soon as we got back to our room, we stripped off and ran down with our buckets and spades. My eldest son was showing my youngest what to do - this was the baby's first real experience of sand and he was mesmerised.
I chose this photo as I just love the way the sun is beginning to set behind the two of them. It's also the first time that I genuinely saw a 'brotherly' connection. It’s a wonderful memory of a beautiful evening watching them play together near the sea, which is one of my favourite places to be.
My eldest had a blast. We were staying in a stunning property called The Dune Beach House, and the owners' son befriended him during our stay. On that particular day, we followed a recommendation to visit a strawberry farm close by which had tons of food, games and activities. The owner’s son came with us and played with my son all day. We were also on the beach with him and his family that evening, and my son still talks about his friend and that day now.
Ting’s tips for visiting South Africa with kids
Before we went, a lot of people expressed their concern about taking children to a country with such high crime rates. Of course, the statistics don't lie but we were travelling on a well-known tourist route from Cape Town to Knysna along the Garden Route. We never felt unsafe, mainly because we didn't put ourselves in any risky situations. We stuck to the main hubs and avoided driving long distances at night. So my tip is don't let the negative press put you off, just use your common sense.
Where’s next on your family travel bucket list?
My next trip is not strictly on the family bucket list. I am off to Tenerife - just me and my best friend. It's is a huge, huge treat. I won't know what to do with myself! Well, sleep and read a few books I hope, what a luxury!
Lastly, complete the sentence:
When we shut the front door ready to go and travel as a family, we always make sure we have...
...snacks! We cannot do without them – it makes the journey so much easier when their stomachs are full and their hands and mouths are kept busy!
