Extreme weather – temperatures soar as Europe basks in a heatwave and torrential rain hits parts of the US
This week the UK experienced one if the hottest weeks in 20 years, with temperatures reaching over 30°C (86°F), on Wednesday the hottest June day in 41 years was recorded when a temperature of 34.5°C (94°F) was recorded at Heathrow.
Historic heat levels were experienced in Spain where an all-time June high temperature was reached in Madrid when the thermometer reached 40.3°C (104.5°F). The high temperatures were felt in France also with 35 C (95F) recorded in Paris. The last time the temperature surpassed 35°C (95°F) in Paris in June was six years ago.
The MET office predicted monsoon rains and thunderstorm with snow in the higher reaches for the week in India. Meanwhile, in the US, tropical depression Cindy hit parts of West Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky bringing heavy rainfall and flash flooding in many parts. The New York City metro area was under threat for severe storms and flooding during the week. While Sydney Australia experienced its wettest day in four months when over 50 millimetres of freezing rain falling in one night.
