Extinct animal appears in Oregon park, becomes internet celebrity

An unusual animal was seen wandering around Forest Park near Portland, OR, on Saturday. Hikers and bikers spotted the long-horned, brown-and-white animal and reported the sighting on social media.

When it was identified as an oryx, a local owner of a herd of oryx was notified, and the animal was recaptured and returned to the owner’s property. An oryx is a type of antelope once native to Africa, but has been classified as extinct in the wild. The animal has been reintroduced to protected areas through captive breeding. The Portland oryx, named Yellow Nose, has reached celebrity status, gaining the Twitter handle @pdxoryx and over 300 followers. Read more: oregonlive.com
