Explosion at controversial Tokyo shrine under investigation

Police have begun an investigation into what appeared to be an explosion at Japan’s Yasukuni-jinja (Yasukuni Shrine), Tokyo, yesterday.

Sounds of an explosion in a restroom at the shrine were reported, and police discovered evidence of a possible explosion, including a hole in the ceiling and batteries and wires at the scene. The apparent explosion occurred around 10am, as an annual festival was getting underway at the shrine. No one was injured in the incident. Yasukuni-jinja is the memorial shrine to Japan’s war dead, including a number of leaders convicted of war crimes. Read more: nhk.or.jp
