Enormous ritual arena found near Stonehenge

Archaeologists using ground-penetrating radar have found a monument of up to 90 huge standing stones buried only two miles from Stonehenge.

The stones, which are hidden below a thick, grassy bank, are thought to have formed a ritual arena. Archaeologist Vince Gaffney, who is leading the project, said the remains are ‘the largest surviving stone monument… that has ever been discovered in Britain and possibly in Europe’. It is believed that the stones were hauled into position over 4,500 years ago. Read more: theguardian.com
