Endangered orcas caught on drone camera in Canadian waters

A mother orca and her calf were caught on camera via a drone used by federal scientists researching killer whales in the waters off the coast of British Columbia.

Researchers say the calf was the fifth born to the area’s endangered orca population since December. The scientists captured the footage using a pair of remote-controlled hexacopters hovering 100ft above the cetaceans. The whales, who have been listed as endangered since 2005, are believed to be struggling due to lack of food and pollution, but scientists hope this year’s baby boom marks a resurgence in the population.
