Durban awarded 2022 Commonwealth Games

The South African coastal city of Durban has been chosen to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, making it the first city in Africa to do so.

The event, which welcomes athletes from more than 50 countries, will begin on 18 July and finish 13 days later. The start date coincides with what would have been Nelson Mandela’s 104th birthday. The final decision on the host city was a unanimous one, with Durban being the only remaining bidder after the Canadian city of Edmonton withdrew its bid in February for financial reasons.
