Dublin seaside suburb opts for urban beach Berlin-style
One of Dublin’s best-known suburbs is to go ahead with plans to develop an 'urban beach' along the lines of Berlin’s Badeschiff project.
Efforts to block the development on Dún Laoghaire’s East Pier on cost and planning grounds were defeated at the local council meeting this week.
This now opens the way for the project to go full steam ahead. It envisages a café and artificial beach close to one of Ireland’s busiest ports, alongside a floating river barge containing a swimming pool with heated, treated seawater, the Irish Times reports.
The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council decision, which has been approved twice before, will cost the local authority an estimated €2.5m to construct. There will also be an estimated bill of €300,000 in planning costs.
The total costs are to be divided between the council and the Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company - which is responsible for harbour development.
