Dominica cancels annual World Creole Music Festival

As rains continue to pummel Dominica and cause significant flooding, the island nation is still reeling from the devastation wrought by Tropical Storm Erika.

Yesterday the government announced the cancellation of the annual World Creole Music Festival, an event that normally draws tens of thousands of visitors to the island. Robert Tonge, Dominica’s minister for tourism and urban renewal, says that the country must focus on rebuilding infrastructure and providing housing for those displaced; while the official festival will not be moving forward, private donors will be hosting a series of relief concerts in its place to aid with the reconstruction efforts. Tropical Storm Erika killed 30 Dominica residents and destroyed large parts of the country’s communities and infrastructure, causing damages that are estimated to cost $220 million.
