Design a bug competition: and the winner is...

Our Backyard Explorer book inspires children to have fun as they learn about the world on their doorstep. To get kids thinking about life in their backyard, we ran a competition with Learning Resources, a company which specialises in creating toys to help children learn as they play.

We asked children to design a bug for their own backyard. We also wanted to know the bug's name and what made it special.

Winner: Blooming Bug by Emma, 9

We were so impressed with all the entries, it was hard to choose the winner and three runners-up! But in the end this Blooming Bug by nine-year-old Emma won our hearts.

'My bug is special because when he feels threatened he burrows under the ground and his bulb turns into a flower and his wings turn into leaves' – Emma, 9

Can you spot seven-year-old Ilinca's Inimioara (which means Little Heart in Romanian), Speckles by 13-year-old Ashley and eight-year-old Abigail's Poisonous Bubble Bug?
