See exactly where your luggage is at the airport with Delta's new tracker app
Forget that feeling of anxiously wondering if your luggage is going to meet you at the airport, Delta will now track your own bag on a map, using the airline’s app.
Passengers on the airline who check baggage will be able to watch as their luggage heads through various checkpoints at the airport, as well as from one plane to the next for those on connecting flights.
The airline says it is the first carrier to provide passengers with that level of visibility on the status of their luggage. The updating of information has been made possible after the company introduced radio frequency identification (RFID) bag tags, which makes it easier to locate luggage. That feature has been rolled out at 84 airports in the US and passengers will be able to track their bags at all domestic airports, and the technology will soon expand to international locations.
Customers will be able to see a zoomed out map of the US as their bag travels from one airport to another, then they can zoom to an airport view and see the journey of their bag around the airport.
While the app may ease the mind of worried travellers, reports actually show that the number of delayed, damaged or stolen bags dropped in 2015. Better technology – and the ability to track luggage at every checkpoint – has led to a 10.5% decrease in lost luggage.
