Costa Rica launches new Gross National Happiness index

The National Teacher’s Cooperative, COOPENAE, in Costa Rica has launched the Gross National Happiness Index, which it hopes to carry out on an annual or biannual basis.

Surveying over 1200 Costa Ricans, the Cooperative found that 85.5% of those polled were satisfied with their lives. The poll measured nine categories: ecological diversity, use of time, health, education, psychological well being, living standards, community, government, and cultural identity. In April, Costa Rica was named the 12th happiest country in the world according to the 2015 World Happiness Report carried out by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network, a U.N.-affiliated organization.
