Four beaches in the Costa Brava resort of Pineda del Mar were closed overnight late last week after four shark sightings in shallow waters. The blue sharks, whose usual habitat is more tropical waters, were no more than 2m in length and were not thought to be dangerous to humans, but Spanish lifeguards closed the beaches to prevent panic spreading among bathers. The red-flag alert was changed to a yellow flag on Friday but swimmers have been told to remain cautious and stick close to shore while the warning remains in place. Read more:
