Copenhagen's Little Mermaid too naked for Facebook!
Edvard Eriksen's statue of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen may be one of the most photographed attractions in Denmark, but when Danish Social Democrat MP Mette Gjerskov tried to use it in an ad to promote her blog on Facebook, she discovered that the social media site's censors deemed that the sculpture violated its policy on nudity.
Gjerskov appealed the ruling - which cited 'too much bare skin or sexual undertones' - and Facebook later lifted its ban.The image of the statue, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, had to be pulled anyway, however, due to copyright restrictions. Although the Little Mermaid is widely photographed, the sculptor's family strenuously uphold the copyright, and many media organisations choose not to use images of it to avoid facing hefty bills.
