US set for more visitors as brand-savvy UK shoppers nab Christmas bargains in New York
It has always been a mecca for shoppers, but now that it has been revealed that there are great Christmas bargains in New York, the city could be in line for an influx of British shoppers. A survey has revealed that brand-savvy UK visitors could save hundreds of pounds on Christmas gifts there, provided they choose the right brands.
The survey found that as well as enjoying the sights and experiences like skating at The Rockefeller Center, shoppers can enjoy savings of between 11 and 62% on ‘must-have’ toys compared with the UK, including the latest Star Wars and Finding Dory figures. It also found savings of up to 58% on designer clothes items, including those from fashion labels Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch.
The 10th annual Post Office Travel Money Christmas Shopping Guide in conjunction with global flight and travel search website, Cheapflights, revealed that British shoppers can save 43% on a basket of 10 gifts within the £390 duty free limit.
According to Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money, the US has remained popular with UK tourists throughout 2016, leading to a 13% rise in their dollar sales this year. "The fall in the US dollar’s value in recent days will make the country even better value," he says.
The survey advised caution over British and European brands though, including Karen Millen, Ted Baker, All Saints, Diesel, Burberry and Superdry. It found that these could cost up to 67% more in New York than in London. “Sterling is still 16% weaker than last November so it is now doubly important for UK visitors to do their homework before parting with cash," says Andrew. "It will pay dividends to know which brands to choose and which to avoid.”
