Nearly 600 million people in China are set to travel for Golden Week
As China celebrates Golden Week, nearly 600 million people will be travelling to local and international tourist destinations during the seven-day holiday.
The national holiday began with China’s National Day on Saturday, and is followed by seven days of holiday time, where people in China can relax and travel.
China Tourism Academy has predicted that 589 million people will travel during the holiday, reports the International Business Times, a 12% increase from last year.
For those who are travelling internationally – estimated to be about six million people – the top destinations are China’s close neighbours of Thailand, South Korea and Japan, according to China’s National Tourism Administration. The top destinations within China include places like the Forbidden City in Beijing and Lijiang, as well as Shanghai Disneyland, reports Fortune.
Some travellers are also heading further afield, with a record number of Chinese travellers expected to visit the US during Golden Week. Bookings to the States between 1 and 7 October are triple what they were last year, according to a report by Lvmama.com, an online booking site.
