China to expand high-speed rail network to Inner Mongolia

Travellers will soon be able to reach remote Inner Mongolia via high-speed rail. Inner Mongolia is a province in the north of China that borders Mongolia.

China’s development commission announced plans to connect the Inner Mongolian cities of Chifeng and Tongliao with neighbouring Liaoning province  by building a new branch off of the Beijing-Shenyang railway line. Trains will travel at speeds of up to 250km per hour, which will likely reduce travel times between the destinations to around an hour or less. The line is expected to go into operation by 2020.
