China planning to build new railway line to Tibet
China has announced it will build a new railway line linking the city of Chengdu with Tibet’s capital city, Lhasa.
Currently, travellers can reach Tibet via the Qinghai-Tibet Railway line, which links Beijing to Lhasa, as well as flights from several cities in mainland China and Nepal. The new railway line would connect Chengdu, in southwestern Sichuan province, to Lhasa in around 15 hours. Critics of the project say the new train line could have negative consequences for the environment and culture of Tibet, while proponents argue that the railway will provide further economic benefits and encourage tourism to Tibet.
